Shaheen Bhatt on Monday took to Instagram to reveal some of the nasty messages, rape threats, and harassment faced on social media after Sushant Singh Rajput’s demise. In a strongly-worded post, Shaheen shared pictures of all the rape and deaths she and her family have been receiving for the past month. “Does this surprise you? Why? It does not surprise me,” her caption on the post read.
Daughter of filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan, Shaheen has also penned a best selling book on her journey through Mental Illness. In her latest post, she shared a few statistics that stated a woman in India is raped every 15 minutes. She further went to elaborate that the statistics shouldn’t be surprising given India’s reputation as a country that loves showing people their “aukaad” ( true worth) or “putting them in their place”. Shaheen said that while she did debate putting this out on social media, she changed her mind believing she needs to do her part in creating a safer space for women online.
Shaheen further wrote down a list of steps she will take against users who send her online rape threats or harassment messages. She revealed that it will first be blocked and reported. Second, she said, “I will NOT protect your identity.” And third, “I will use all legal recourse available to take action. If you think you can’t be located because you think your account is anonymous, please think again — IP addresses are easily trackable. You are not invisible. Harassment is a crime.”
“I should not have to change the way I use a platform if someone is being abusive. They should. Full Stop,” she concluded.
