Only a few people know that prior to Vikram, Mani Ratnam had roped in Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu and Kollywood actor Thalapathy Vijay for Ponniyin Selva around four year ago. Mahesh Babu termed his collaboration with Mani Ratnam his dream come true.
Besides Mahesh, Vijay was also roped in to play the leading role of Arulmozhi Varman, who later becomes the Chola emperor Rajaraja I. After signing the film, Vijay described it a “privilege” and a “dream come true” to be working with Mani Ratnam for the first time.
However, their dream of being starred in Mani Ratnam’s film shattered when the director shelved the film for unknown reasons.
