Noti Binodini Biopic: Deepika Padukone to play lead role in Pradeep Sarkar’s next

Binodini Dasi —  who is popularly known as Notee Binodini — was a veteran Bengali actress.  Noti Binodini debuted in acting when she was just 12-year old. If the report in IWMbuzz is to be believed, the autobiography of Noti Binodini will be remade in Hindi language and the central role will be played by none other than Deepika Padukone.

According to the reports, the biography of Noti Binodini will be directed by Pradeep Sarkar, who has approached Deepika Padukone for the lead role. Her biography is already made in the Bengali language, which featured Prosenjit Chatterjee and Debashree Roy titled Nati Binodini was made in the year 1994.

As per the source close to the development said IWMbuzz, “Deepika Padukone has been finalised for the prestigious Pradeep Sarkar project. She will play the central character of Binodini Dasi in the movie. It is believed that Vidya Balan was also in contention for the role with whom Pradeep Sarkar has earlier worked in Parineeta.”

Talking about Noti Binodini, she was born to prostitution and started her career as a courtesan when she was merely 12-year old. She played her first serious drama role in Calcutta’s National Theatre in 1874, under the mentorship of its founder, Girish Chandra Ghosh.

Her career coincided with the growth of the proscenium-inspired form of European theatre among the Bengali theatre-going audience. During her career spanning more than a decade, she enacted over eighty roles, which included those of Pramila, Sita, Draupadi, Radha, Ayesha, Kaikeyi, Motibibi, and Kapalkundala, among others.

She was one of the first South Asian actresses of the theatre to write her own autobiography. Her sudden retirement from the stage is insufficiently explained. Her autobiography has a consistent thread of betrayal. She violates every canon of the feminine smritikatha and wrote down what amounted to her indictment of respectable society. Ramakrishna, the great saint of 19th century Bengal, came to see her play in 1884.

She was a pioneering entrepreneur of the Bengali stage and introduced modern techniques of stage make-up through blending European and indigenous styles.

The report is neither confirmed by Deepika Padukone nor the director himself.

On the professional front, Deepika Padukone has recently wrapped up the shooting of a film 83 starring her real-life husband Ranveer Singh.
