Emmy Awards Nominations List 2020, Take a Look

Netflix breaks the record for most nominations in a single year. Watchmen, Ozark, Stranger Things among most nominated shows.

The 72nd Emmy Awards Nominations were announced on Tuesday. While a string of A-list shows made it to the list, there were some other surprising entries. Netflix broke the record for most nominations in a single year, scoring 160 in total. HBO held the previous record with 137 nominations in 2019.

The most-nominated series was HBO’s Watchmen, with 26 in all, followed by Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with 20. Netflix’s Ozark and HBO’s Succession each scored 18, while Disney+’s The Mandalorian, NBC’s Saturday Night Live, and Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek each earned 15 noms.

Dramas competing for the best series include The Mandalorian, Ozark, and Succession along with AMC’s Better Call Saul, Netflix’s The Crown, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, BBC Amerca’s Killing Eve and Netflix’s Stranger Things.

Shows vying for best comedy are HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, Netflix’s Dead to Me, NBC’s The Good Place, HBO’s Insecure, Netflix’s The Kominsky Method and FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.

While the United States is in the throes of the Black Lives Matter movement, Hollywood has also called upon racial justice and inclusion. The most nominated series watchmen opened with the Tulsa race massacre which marks a significant beginning in the industry.

“This year, we are also bearing witness to one of the greatest fights for social justice in history. And it is our duty to use this medium for change,” Frank Scherma, chairman, and CEO of the Television Academy said at the outset of the presentation.

Similarly, unlike every year, Black actors landed nominations in major categories including Issa Rae, Zendaya, Yvonne Orji, Kerry Washington, Anthony Anderson, and Tracee Ellis Ross.

A high energy Jones kicked off Tuesday’s announcement by appearing on a virtual set and joking that she was told there would be many others on set to announce the nominees, but instead, she was locked in a studio with only a cameraman.

Owing to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Emmy Award Shows will be a virtual event. Final-round voting for the Emmys begins Aug. 21 and runs through Aug. 31.

The 72nd Emmy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who will also serve as executive producer. The show will be broadcast on Sept. 20 on ABC.
