‘Beyonce Sharma Jayegi’: Khaali Peeli makers slammed for promoting colourism, Twitter reacts

The Ishaan Khatter and Ananya Panday featured 'Beyonce Sharma Jayegi' is being slammed by netizens for its colourism undertones. Twitter trends #IAmSorryBeyonce.

The first track of Ishaan Khatter and Ananya Panday’s Khaali Peeli has arrived. The song “Beyonce Sharma Jayegi” features both the lead actors dressed in sequined outfits dancing to the peppy number. However, much to the maker’s disappointment, the song has been trending for all the wrong reasons.

The line “Tujhe Dekh ke goriya, Beyonce Sharma jayegi” which translates to “Your fair skin will make Beyonce shy” has left Twitter fuming over racist undertones. Many social media users apologized to the pop icon Beyonce for the racist lyrics. Others also slammed Vishal and Shekhar for composing a song that promotes colourism.

“’Beyonce sharma jayegi’ was not only problematic and racist. IT DID NOT EVEN RHYME! THAT IS THE LEAST THEY COULD DO! Extremely disappointed & disgusted! #BeyonceSharmaJayegi #KhaaliPeeli #KhaaliPeeliTrailer,” another wrote.

“This is just blatantly ignoring the fact how they’re glorifying fair skin (yet again) and then comparing it to Beyoncé (a black woman). This is RACIST. Y’all are embarrassing yourselves. TAKE THIS DOWN AND APOLOGIZE #BeyonceSharmaJayegi,” another wrote.

“If @Beyonce is creating a petition to ban the makers of Khaali Peeli from making another item song EVER again, I’m signing it. I also might put a revolver to all your heads and make you sign it as well. #BeyonceSharmaJayegi,” another tweet read. Many Twitter users also shared memes on the song.

Directed by Maqbool Khan, Beyonce Sharma Jayegi is sung by Nakash Aziz and Neeti Mohan. Its lyrics have been written by Kumaar and Raj Shekhar. The film is set to release on Pay-per-view service Zee Plex on October 2.
